Since this isn’t really my job, I have the luxury of picking and choosing the shows I review. Most of the time, I pay for my ticket and so feel I’ve paid for the right to blog the show. Mostly I blog the show if I have something to say about it.
I have, on occasion, been asked to review a show in exchange for a comp ticket. I’m open to that and, provided it is a good show, it seems like a fair exchange: a comp ticket for some decent web coverage you can pass around on Facebook. But a comp ticket does not guarantee I’ll like it. I write the shows the way I see them.
I’ve also been known to sit in on rehearsals or previews to give feedback to the directors, but those aren’t official performances, so I don’t give them the full treatment.
You can follow me on Facebook, though, where I’m likely to give blurbs on shows I recommend or work I’m finding interesting whist in production.
